State of the Arts is a New York and Mid-Atlantic Emmy Award-winning public television series produced by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and Stockton University in cooperation with PCK Media since 2011. State of the Arts airs on NJ PBS, WNET, and ALL ARTS, and is available to stream on PBS.org as well as the State of the Arts NJ YouTube channel.

Helen M. Stummer: Social Documentary Photographer
This winner of the 2017 Mid-Atlantic Emmy for Outstanding Arts/Entertainment Program Feature profiles Helen M. Stummer, an intrepid photographer who spent over 30 years documenting one of Newark’s toughest neighborhoods. Her 2017 memoir, Risking Life and Lens, was published by Temple University Press.
Guthrie at Greystone
This winner of the 2014 Mid-Atlantic Emmy for Outstanding Arts/Entertainment Program Feature tells the story of folksinger and writer Woody Guthrie’s last years at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital. Photographer Phil Buehler documented the abandoned hospital, which was destroyed shortly after this story was produced. Buehler’s images are juxtaposed with rare family photographs, letters, and film footage.
Steel Roots: Steve Tobin, Sculptor
This winner of the 2012 Mid-Atlantic Emmy for Outstanding Arts/Entertainment Program Feature goes on location to Tobin’s studio, explores his background, and visits his work on site at Grounds for Sculpture and in New York, in The Trinity, a work created in response to 9/11.
